分詞構句共分四種，兩種為主動，兩種為被動。主動的兩種，又細分為兩個事件同時發生，以及一個事件先發生。被動的兩種，也是細分為兩個事件同時發生，以及一個事件先發生。
主動，同時發生
Jannson sat in her car. She watched the lion.
→ Sitting in her car, Jannson watched the lion.
→ Watching the lion,
Jannson sat in her car.
The lion observed the
hippo. The lion followed the hippo.
→ Observing the hippo, the lion followed it.
→ Following the hippo, the lion observed it.
主動，先發生一個
Jannson had sat in her car. She then watched the lion.
→ Having sat in her car,
she then watched the lion.
The lion had observed the
hippo. The lion followed the hippo.

被動，同時發生
Jannson was put in her car. She watched the lion.
